Amazon's Challenge to Business: Turn Off Your Datacenter

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Whenever we interview startups (which will be often here on FastCompany.TV) we hear "we're an Amazon shop" quite frequently. What does that mean? Well, for photosharing service SmugMug it means saving a ton of money by having Amazon store all of its data on its S3 Web Service. We don't know of a technology that's changing the infrastructure of business faster than what Amazon's built, so we went to Amazon's headquarters to talk with Jeff Barr, Amazon's evangelist for its Web Services team, to find out Amazon's plans.

Because I deeply appreciate the role of tecnologie of the modern world. It is innovation that i processes to develop systems that solve problems and extend human capabilities and it is also the innovation, change, or modification of the natural environment to satisfy perceived human needs and wants.

Fascinating interview with lots of great information. My Google Alerts are heating up with links about "cloud computing". I highly doubt that anyone will be trying to mimic Amazon and its cloud offerings, unless Google or Microsoft come to the table. For me, this interview was very insightful from both a corporate and personal level. As the Technology Evangelist for ServePath, a dedicated hosting provider, I have had to try to understand and explain the various terms floating around the blogosphere. Also, people should understand that there are other options for start-ups than Amazon. You may need someone to really be able to answer your questions about whatever service you choose. I would just be concerned that during a crunch, people may be frustrated by a huge company's support (or lack thereof).
Regardless, I do have utmost respect for what Amazon is doing, if only to plow the way for others to create even better offerings behind them.

Robert - Awesome interview with Jeff. BTW, the email archiving company that Jeff discusses who is leveraging AWS, S3, EC2, etc in the interview is Sonian Networks. www.soniannetworks.com

AWS is the perfect tool for bootstrapping startups. We've just moved to S3 for large media storage and we are expecting to greatly enhance our capacity while reducing costs. We now can allow independent filmmakers and producers to upload files up to 1GB in size. This will help push HD-quality video for indie film.

thank you very much for putting us in "contact" with these guys. i find incredible that this guy don't know where his datacenters are, but this is not his business.

Robert, why isn't there any lenght information about the video.
Jeff, come to Europe for your meeting group, developpers are all over the world ;-)

Sorry for not having downloads yet. We're working on those.

are there any downloadable version of all the video like in podtech.net? Streaming is difficult here. I prefer download first and watch it offline

PS: A small tip, can you make ajax comments ? While posting the previous post I was watching the video and it refreshed the page.

I really like fastcompany.tv and being a developer I love videos with tech stuff. It's very interesting to learn about the infrastructure of big websites.
Continue posting tech videos.
